Foot Surgery

Thursday (8-20-09) - I went to the podiatrist today for more x-rays and the doctor told me that Workman's Comp had called on Wednesday and okayed the surgery. Dr.Cooper (who happened to be my family home evening brother at Ricks College many moons ago) thought that surgery was out of the question because it had been too long since the fall/break and too much healing had occurred. But after he saw the x-rays, he changed his mind. So he scheduled surgery for the next day, Friday (no time to worry!!!)

Friday (8-21-09) 10:00 pm - Thanks for everyones thoughts and prayers.....I'm home and trying to keep my foot elevated, using ice packs, etc. The surgery went well, although it was worse than the doctor expected. He had to clean out bones chips and then saw through the 2nd metetarcle (sp) and put a screw in each of the 3 metetarcles. It had not healed as he had thought it had, so it was easier to fix yet a mess when he got in there.....

also..... I can not put any weight on my foot for 5 weeks, nor can I wiggle my toes.....I'm just in my boot for now...and in 10 days he will be putting me in a hard cast.....so fun and games abound....Brian and I just took a stroll around the subdivision with me in the wheelchair and Brian pushing. That was nice to feel the cool evening air....anyway...that's the latest.....thanks again for everything.....

Saturday (8-22-09) - I think part of the hardest thing with this whole process will be being restrained to my house for so long.....I can't put any weight on my right foot for at least 5 weeks...I can't even wiggle my toes. I told Brian, last night, that I'd love to go for a stroll every evening. I can use my crutches to get down my patio stairs (they are not steep) and then transfer to my wheel chair. Our front room looks like a hospital room....wheel chair, crutches and walker. (I have thought a great deal about my Mom since last night - knowing how hard it must have been for her to be constrained as she was the last few years of her life - she seldom complained to me about having to use a walker or wheelchair. I want to be like her when I grow up). It hasn't been 24 hours and already, I think, it's wearing on Brian. It's hard to be told or asked to be doing something for someone all the time. I am trying to be as independent as possible. He just left to go down to Rod Tieken's to get Rod's front loader to scrap down the dirt in the front yard where we had to have it dug up to fix our water line 2 years ago. Rod offered to let Brian use it. Randy Opeikens also offered to let Brian use his scooper to transfer dirt. We have very good neighbors who have helped us the past 2 weeks.....truly a blessing to us.

Well, that's my latest.....thanks again for your thoughts and prayers and for putting our names in the temple. It is certainly helping to boost out emotions right now.
